Center for Practical Theology Annual Lecture-- “The Grammar of Vocation”

  • Boston University School of Theology (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

We are excited to invite you to a series of events on Wednesday, October 24, focused on the topic of vocation/calling. Dr. Kathleen Cahalan will present this year's Center for Practical Theology Annual Lecture at BU School of Theology. Her talk is entitled "The Grammar of Vocation: Changing the Way We Talk about Our Callings." Dr. Cahalan has written extensively on the subject of vocation and is coordinating the various Lilly Endowment-sponsored innovation hubs. At our August 23 Creative Callings gathering, each hub congregation received a copy of Dr. Cahalan's book The Stories We Live: Finding God’s Calling All Around UsSince her work is a featured resource of the Hub, we hope you might be able to join us at the following events at the School of Theology:

First, inspired by the book, we invite Hub participants to "Stories of Calling" prior to the Annual Lecture, 4-5:30 PM. During this time, we will briefly introduce the importance of narrative in building communities of call and we will hold small circle gatherings to begin to share our own personal and communal stories of call with one another. We envision this as a time to deepen conversations and connections initiated at the August Hub event in a more informal setting. Refreshments will be provided, and Dr. Claire Wolfteich will facilitate our conversation.

We also invite you to the Annual Lecture. The Reception for the Annual Lecture will begin at 5:30pm in the Community Center (where we met for our program in August) with the Lecture to follow.

Parking passes will be made available; you'll be able to indicate this at the RSVP. For our planning, please RSVP at this link by Wednesday, October 10. We have attached the flyer for the Annual Lecture if you would like to share with your communities. While we'll need to reserve the "Stories of Calling" event to just Hub members, please feel free to spread the word about the Annual Lecture. For anyone who can't join in person, we hope you'll join via the event Livestream.
